This knowledge allows pharmacists to assess a patient’s condition accurately before determining the most appropriate treatment option based on their individual needs. In addition to providing advice on how to take medicines correctly and helping patients recognize any potential side effects or drug interactions that may occur, pharmacists also offer counselling services on lifestyle modifications that could help improve long-term outcomes. With their expertise in medication safety and efficacy, pharmacists have become an integral part of the healthcare system by ensuring patients get access to safe and effective treatments for their conditions.

Pharmacists will be able to prescribe Paxlovid to eligible individuals at no cost starting December 12, 2022. Eligible individuals can contact Optimum Pharmacy to be evaluated by the pharmacist to see if Paxlovid is a good option for them.

The prescription drug Paxlovid is for people who:

Have symptoms of COVID-19 and have tested positive for the virus (lab-based PCR, rapid molecular, or rapid antigen test (including rapid tests done at home))

The Paxlovid prescribing must occur within five days of symptom onset.

The person receiving the prescription must be 60 years of age or older, 18 years of age or older and immunocompromised, or 18 to 59 years old and at a higher risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes.
